Different types of field trials
Yes really!
Field trials allow for dogs to compete in the aspects that the breed was developed for.
For example their are Field Trials that focus on Retrieving, which Labradors and Golden Retrievers excel at. (GSPs have entered these but with very limited success. Although GSPs are bred to retrieve, the high hunting drive and keen nose of a GSP can lead it off the line easily.)
Field Trials that simulate Wing Shooting (which is what the GSP was developed for) are divided into two types HPR and BB. Yes more acronyms:
HPR – Hunt Point and Retrieve
BB – British Breed (these exclude the Retrieve which also means the dog is not required to enter water)
BB trials are traditionally for Setters and English Pointers and… others. Some GSPs have had amazing success at these trials. However it is worth keeping in mind that traditionally BB dogs run bigger (hunt further away from the handler) than what traditional GSPs would.
HPR trails are where most GSPs compete and showcase what the breed is all about.
