Why?
A Working Breed
German Shorthaired Pointers are beautiful but more than that they are purpose bred as working dogs who hunt point and retrieve, arguably the best and most versatile breed to do so.
As a breed club we are passionately dedicated to preserving the working ability of GSPs in South Africa.
Extract from the NFTA Regulations for HPR Breeds
Objectives:
- To identify, foster and promote the most desirable traits of HPR breeds with reference to The Standard, to enable breeders to maintain and improve their breeds in the RSA
- To provide competition of the highest caliber and encourage owner participation
- To conduct field trials on suitable terrain and quarry. Quarry should be in sufficient numbers to minimize the element of luck and give each competing Dog an equal opportunity.
- To inform the public of the level of performance required to perpetuate the most desirable qualities possessed by the HPR breeds.

The plan
A group of enthusiastic Field Trailers approached the GSP Gauteng Club committee in October 2023 with a proposal for the club to affiliate to the NFTA and to allow them to run a field trial. This would ensure 3 NFTA affiliated trials take place per season, enabling dogs to qualify for Nationals. The majority voted in favor of the proposal on the basis that field trials preserve the working characteristics of the breed.
Next
Finding birds….
A vital part of the success of a trial is the surveying to find suitable land. Luckily it is also a great opportunity to get dogs out into the veld and expose them to new ground and situations and for the more serious and experienced dogs to do some work. And of course to meet up with old friends and make new ones.
The execution
- 20 Handlers
- 26 Unique dogs
- 3 Derby dogs
- 7 Maiden dogs
- 23 Open dogs
- Plentiful birds
- A Plate Stake for the dogs who fell out during the Derby and Maiden
Without the farmers who allowed us the use of their land and the various sponsors we would have been lost.
Thank you!

COMPETITOR
To all involved in organizing this wonderful event, so very well done. Not only to the people at the trial but also to everyone working so hard behind the scene. It was a great trial, great venue, great accomodation, too many birds
, great veld kitchen with awesome eats and treats, especially the scones, strawberry jam and whipped cream which was the highlight for me, nice spirit and lekker vibe. Thank you for the awesome gifts that we all received. Everything was just perfect. You have set a very high standard. Blessed and proud to have been able to be a part of such a prestigious event. Thank you.
